Mike & Gina Yancey: There is a River

Pastor Mike Yancey

Living Water

We are made thirsty for God. St. Augustine of Africa: “O God! Thou hast made us for Thyself and our souls are restless, searching, til they find their rest in Thee.”
At the feast in Jerusalem, Jesus said, “If any man thirst, let him come to me and drink.” I am the fountain, filled with life-giving properties, contrasted with the filthy fountains of world.
Why do men run about, engaged in all sorts of pursuits? Are they really having the “time of their life” or is it because they are thirsty and don’t know how to satisfy it?
Intellectuals pursue academic careers, knowledge, science, vociferous reading, or off-beat companions. Some lose themselves in art, culture, literary forms, and are amongst the most jaded people- to them life seems a mockery. Others are adrenaline junkies who throw themselves into physical activities. Others travel, some are addicted to sports, community functions, hobbies, and they don’t satisfy!
The thrill is like taking a sip, for a moment, instead of drinking the whole glass, and they are left dehydrated, empty, parched! That’s how Christ saw the multitudes- they were thirsty souls who were not drinking from the fount of life. Thirsty souls who didn't know where to look for water.

“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.”- Jer. 2:13
