Mike Yancey : In The Fullness of Time

The Desires of the Heart

I have been completely fascinated with the thought that God truly cares about my life. With transparency I must tell you there have been many times I have prayed to God about issues, things which I deeply desired and considered necessities of life for me and my family. God has not answered immediately, which has caused pain and great angst. Then I notice He brings these very things to pass quietly, almost without me knowing what He is doing.
(One country song thanks God for “unanswered prayers!” I have had a few desires God did not fulfill, but I recognized them as truly just desires and passing fancies, and I have been alright with God not giving me those things.)
The reason I bring this up, is what my wife said to me the other day, when I proposed this very idea to her.  She said, “It has something to do with our heart, being in tune with His. Our desires are not evil.” This made me think of my life…I have not fought God, but have truly sought His face and his will.
Like Jacob, I have not had the best methods, but my motives have been pure. I have tried to work things out one way, and God has worked them out another. Rest assured, the desires that are in your heart, if you love God, are most likely desires God not only allowed you to have, but also put there Himself!

It has a way of blending the two into one, you and God together. We are haunted with the image of people wanting things from God like a spoiled child trying to take advantage of an indulgent grand-parent. But I want to remind you that the Scripture clearly says,
“Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
(Psa 37:3-5)

Yes, the things I care about, God proves He does too.
